Topic: Moving Management of Information Risk out of IT and into the Business; Challenges and Successes at HSBC

To remain competitive in this rapidly evolving world of technological advancement, the focus of information risk must be on the information itself and not on the protection of the IT systems that manage the data. To build a competitive advantage, information risk must be addressed at the highest levels of the organization and not regarded as just a technical specialty.

HSBC North America has moved the management of Information Risk out of IT and into the business in order to take a broader, more risk-based approach to information risk, and to optimize collaboration opportunities between IT, North America lines of business and other global HSBC entities.

Peter Hill, the North American CISO for HSBC, is prepared to share some of the challenges and successes they have encountered in the rollout and management of this new department including their highly successful Business Information Risk Officer (BIRO) program and the support that is being provided from all levels of the organization, starting with the Board of Directors.

Presenter BIO:
Peter Hill is the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for HSBC North America (NYSE:HBC), one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organizations. He is responsible for establishing the HSBC North America enterprise-wide Information Security governance framework and structure to align the company with industry best practices and to take a broader risk-based approach while effectively safeguarding company, employee and customer information across all HSBC North America products, channels and lines of business.

Peter joined HSBC in January 2002 and has directed Information Technology, Compliance and Enterprise Risk activities prior to his role as CISO. Prior to HSBC, Peter led an Operations department for Wingspanbank.com, a Bank One Internet initiative and prior to that he directed business integration activities for retail banking at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Peter has his master of business administration from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers.
